Taliban appoint co-founder as top negotiator for talks with US

"The esteemed Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar has been appointed ... chief of the political office," Taliban spokesman said in a statement. He added that the step was taken to properly handle the ongoing negotiations process with the United States. Insurgents said on Thursday they had held four straight days of talks with US officials in Doha.
